Introduction to.... A future dental hygienist (hopefully)

Hi y'all! My name is Madeline Heath and I am a senior at OU - every time I say that I am a senior, I get a little more sad to be leaving.

Here at OU I am graduating with a Bachelor Degree in Health and Exercise Science, however my academic career will not end in the Spring. Post graduation, I am attending Dental Hygiene school to further my love for science and helping others. One interesting (very, very weird) fact about myself is that I LOVE school and studying. My friends always joke with me saying that studying is probably my biggest passion.

A little background from me:
I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Colorado - more specifically in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.Although I loved living in Colorado, I always knew I wanted to attend college out of town. Everyone always asked me why I would ever choose to leave Colorado to go to Oklahoma. I often laugh because leaving the mountains and crisp air for cloudy and humid sounds a little crazy. However, Oklahoma has become more of a home to me in these past 4 years than Colorado ever felt like. To me, I feel as though I made this place my home on my own, whereas, my parents kind of made Colorado my home for me. I chose the University of Oklahoma because it crossed off every single one of my requirements: big football, big greek life, lots of history, and out of CO. To this day, my decision to leave my comfort zone and leave home was the best decision I've ever made.

My beautiful home town

From the age of 3 up until my senior year of high school, I was a dancer. It became my entire life, and I spent the majority of my free time at dance practice. Another one of my hobbies is writing. I love journals, letters - really anything revolving writing. I am excited to continue on this semester with this course!

  1. Hi Madeline! I was a Health and Exercise major at one point and still wish I could do it but I'm too behind in credits at this point. It's such a good major, though! Also, Colorado is a beautiful place to live and it is one of my favorite states. I know what you mean about Oklahoma feeling like home, though. I've lived here for about 20 years and as much as I say I'm tired of it, every time I leave I feel a bit sad. Anyways, I hope you enjoy the course!

  2. Hi Madeline, it's nice to meet you! I can relate to the moving-far-from-home thing; I'm from Iowa originally. It's so cool that we can have so many different "homes" in life, isn't it? I still feel like Iowa is home to me, but so is Oklahoma now, and one or two other places as well. I also really love writing! I'm actually minoring in English Writing here at OU. Anyway, I hope to see more from you on your blog over the course of the semester!

  3. Hi Melanie!
I think it's awesome that you have a passion for helping others and are pursuing a career in it. I wish I had your love for school, but since entering college I have found myself enjoying and getting a lot more out of my schooling than I ever did in high school. And you were not kidding about having a beautiful hometown. I love visiting Colorado and would like to live there at some point in my life.

  4. Hi Madeline! I think it's awesome that you jumped out of your comfort zone and came to OU. My husband always says he wants to move to Colorado because he loves to snowboard, but our families are here. I actually have a pic with one of those Colorado signs from a trip I took in high school.

Good luck at Dental Hygiene school! I am glad there are people like you out there, because I do NOT do teeth. Like I'll take care of my own and my kids', but otherwise NO THANKS. :)

  5. Here I am finally getting around to the last of the Introductions, Madeline, and I was so happy when I saw your blog post title: I am a very big fan of dental hygienists thanks to the wonderful hygienist I have been seeing for over 10 years now... dentists are very important too of course, but it's the hygienist who has really been my helper, and when she switched to a new dentist a few years ago, a LOT of the other dentist's patients followed her to the new office. We are loyal to our hygienist!
Your image was not coming through there, and that happens sometimes with blog posts. Since you will be getting visitors here all semester long, you might want to edit the post and try it again: the key is to save the image to your computer, and then use the upload option to display it in your blog post. Hopefully it will behave, but if you are still having trouble with that, just let me know. I like the idea of having a "welcome" sign here in your Introduction. :-)

  6. Hi Madeline!
It is nice to meet you! I think its cool that you moved down to Oklahoma for college! I am from Oklahoma. As you can see, I stayed in my comfort zone! I hope in the future, I am able to live some where outside Oklahoma. Even though it has its own beauty, it found be fun and valuable to live elsewhere! Wishing you the best of luck at Dental Hygiene school!

  7. Hi Madeline! I could tell you were a writer from your Mean Girls story! I don't think it's weird at all that you love school and studying - I do too! When you enjoy what you do, you love to learn more, and it seems like somehow you're cheating because you actually like doing the work. But that just means you're passionate about it! I hope you keep writing and doing creative things!

  8. Hey Madeline! Congratulations on making it to your senior year! That is so great that you are continuing your education after you graduate, I have heard lots of great things about the OU Dental Hygiene school. I actually grew up in Kansas and Oklahoma, so this past summer I finally got to visit Colorado and it is SO gorgeous! I have to agree, the crisp, dry air is such a nice change from the warm, humid conditions here haha. It is nice to meet you and I hope you have a great semester!

  9. Hey Madeline!

That is so cool that you are from Colorado! I have been going to Colorado, twice a year, for 26 years now and I love it there. It definitely feels like a second home. Your degree sounds really interesting and I am sure you will have no trouble finding a job once you leave OU. Do you have a dream job that you hope to get?

  10. Hey Madeleine! I really enjoyed getting to know what brought you to OU. I'm from Texas, and I definitely wanted to get away from home (although I'm not sure how far 3 hours really is). I'm also a senior, and it's still crazy to think that I'll be walking the stage in less than 7 months! I definitely wish I had a plan for what to do after I graduate like you do. Looking forward to seeing some of your stories this semester!

  11. Hi Madeline! I also love school and studying so we can be "weirdos" together! I'm so glad that OU has become your home away from home. Despite the crazy weather sometimes, I love Oklahoma! I, too, was a dancer from age 3 until senior year... I miss it like crazy and I'm sure you feel the same way! Thank you for sharing!

  12. Hi Madeline!

I know exactly how you feel. I'm a senior too, and I am so sad about leaving college! Although I'm not so sad about leaving the school part behind. That's great that you love school and studying though! And I'm sure it helps that you love science. I loved reading about why you chose OU and how Oklahoma has become your home. I'm a dancer, too! And it was literally the only life I had until I came to college.

  13. Hi Madeline,

I'm also a senior this year, so I completely understand the sadness about leaving OU. One of my friends is in a dental hygienist school at MSU and they have to learn so much! I hope you find a good school to continue your education and pursue your passion! I loved the photos you added for us to look at. They're all so beautiful and make me want to go back and visit Colorado again. Good luck with the rest of this semester!

  14. Hi Madeline! I can totally relate to how you feel about graduating. I'm about a month away from graduation and it's so hard to think I'm going to be leaving OU. I found it so interesting to read about what brought you to OU. I hope you find a really great dental hygiene school to go to! Good luck and I hope you have a great rest of the semester!
