Week 2: Reading Anthology

Image
After reading all the stories provided, I had one clear favorite. I enjoyed all the other stories, but it took until the very last reading for me to know it was my favorite. My favorite story was Fairy Tale: Beauty and the Basilisk, titled "The Three Roses." "The Three Roses" I was immediately intrigued by this story because there were 3 daughters, and it seemed as though it would be more realistic than some of the other stories. As I was reading, I realized how similar my mom in real life is to the mother in this story; She would do anything for me, much like the mother was when she went out and got everything her daughters wanted. What I would consider the "climax" of this story is what really got me hooked. The mother stumbles upon this palace that she had never seen before. At this moment, I really couldn't decipher whether it was going to be a good thing or a horrible mistake. Reading on, I soon received my answer: it was a horrible mistake. I

Week 2 Reading Overview

Image
After reviewing the reading options from the UnTextbook, I have come up with this plan: Week 3: Adam and Eve Week 4: Homer's Odyssey  Week 5: Life of Buddha  Week 6: Arabian Nights Week 7: Tibet Week 8: *Review* Week 9: Congo  Week 10: Alaska  Week 11: Inuit (Eskimo) Week 12: Canterbury Tales Week 13: Nursery Rhymes  Week 14: Brother's Grimm (Crane) Week 15: Grimm (LibriVox)  I am honestly excited about basically every unit that is required, but I would say that I am most excited about the British/Celtic Units. I am a lover of nursery rhymes as well as the Canterbury tales. However,  I have not been able to fully dive into the core of each of those, which is why I am so excited! Mythology is a concept that I am completely fascinated by, which is why I decided to enroll in this course from the start. My main interest within mythology centers around the Greek Gods and Goddesses and their personal stories and lifestyles. I specifically love to learn the role

Technology

Image
Looking at all of the technology tools, I have a decent knowledge overall, but I am very familiar with Bookmarking. This is something I have been using quite frequently throughout my college years because it reassures me that if I accidentally close out of a tab, it's still saved. It has saved my life countless times already! I have taken a couple other online classes, but this one in particular is unique. In my other classes, I often felt clueless on what the assignments were, or how to complete them, but in this class, it is so organized and makes it easier on me. One skill I want to master this semester is blogging. I have always been intrigued by blogs, but I would love to continue on with blogging even after this class is over! The image below shows the pros and cons of planning before writing a blog post, which is something that I think will benefit me in my future blog posts. Assignments

I am most excited for the Storytelling assignments. I love to write, and in my writing, I like to make it easy going and fun. I think that with these assignments, I will be able to stretch my imagination and also strengthen my writing skills. This is completely unlike what I have ever done in my other classes, because it is an assignment that I can genuinely dive deep in my creativity. I really have not had an assignment that I would consider extremely fun, but I think that this assignment will be the first! A lot of the extra credit opportunities sound very entertaining and exciting, however the one that I am most excited for is the "Famous Last Words" opportunity. I can't wait to reflect the past week and write it down!

Time Strategies

Image
Time Management Strategies: Time management has always been one of the biggest challenges I face in regard to my academics. What I have found is that working ahead, and mainly staying on top of the material in class is the best way to manage your time, which will make you feel overall less overwhelmed. I read two different articles on time management and different strategies to use in the future. Article 1: "The Psychology of Checklists" By: Lauren Marchese https://blog.trello.com/the-psychology-of-checklists-why-setting-small-goals-motivates-us-to-accomplish-bigger-things?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=linkedin&utm_campaign=checklists I found this article extremely useful because it provides a strategy that is simple but dire to managing your time. This article went in depth about how making checklists is a fun and beneficial way to stay on top of school. For me, I love the feeling of crossing off the things on my to do list. One thing I learned from this article

Growth Mindset

Image
I had not had the opportunity of learning about or being familiar with Carol Dweck or the growth mindset prior to this class. Growth and your mindset are two things I value tremendously in my own life, so I am appreciative that I now have the ability to learn more about it. Being a senior in college now, I have learned a significant amount about how I learn, what works and what doesn't work, while my time here at OU. I have learned that not only attending class, but being PRESENT in class is the most beneficial aspect of the courses I have taken. In the past, I would only go to class because it was required, but once I started attending class to learn and be present, I saw a drastic change in my knowledge and grades. Another thing I learned was how to take notes that work for me and that will help my knowledge deepen. I learned that making concept maps with different colors of pens helps the material stick in my head more effectively. Lastly, I learned that being too hard on myse

Introduction to.... A future dental hygienist (hopefully)

Image
Hi y'all! My name is Madeline Heath and I am a senior at OU - every time I say that I am a senior, I get a little more sad to be leaving. Here at OU I am graduating with a Bachelor Degree in Health and Exercise Science, however my academic career will not end in the Spring. Post graduation, I am attending Dental Hygiene school to further my love for science and helping others. One interesting (very, very weird) fact about myself is that I LOVE school and studying. My friends always joke with me saying that studying is probably my biggest passion. A little background from me: I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Colorado - more specifically in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Although I loved living in Colorado, I always knew I wanted to attend college out of town. Everyone always asked me why I would ever choose to leave Colorado to go to Oklahoma. I often laugh because leaving the mountains and crisp air for cloudy and humid sounds a little crazy. However, Oklahoma has b

Storybook Favorites

Image
I read and looked through many different storybooks that I thought were beautifully written, however I narrowed the list to my top 3 favorites. 1. "LGBTQ+ The Other Side" https://sites.google.com/view/lgbtqstories/home Let's start off this post with the storybook called, "The Other Side," This storybook caught my attention from the second I opened the home page. What this author did was define their own definition of what the other side of the coin means by stating that it is, "a different way of considering a situation." This helped aid me in what I should be expecting to get out of this storybook. Moving through this storybook, and onto the Introduction, I was left feeling eager to continue on. The Introduction portrayed a glimpse of the story by introducing the very start of the storybook. This left me wanting to read more, which is what I imagine is the exact goal for this author. I also loved how near the end of the introduction, there was

Vail, Colorado - My Favorite Place

Image
I have traveled quite often in my lifetime, as it is one of my passions, but my absolute favorite place in the world is my home state - Colorado. More specifically, Vail, Colorado. Vail, Colorado.  I was born and raised in a suburb of Denver called Highlands Ranch, Colorado. From the time that I can remember, my family has made it a tradition to spend time at our mountain home in Vail, Colorado. We enjoy skiing and hiking, like many mountain attendees do, but what we love to do when there is little to no snow in Vail, is walk around Vail Village. Here is a picture of Vail Village. Testing New Post

This post is just a testing post to see how my blog will look in the future. I am excited to create content on this blog in the next coming months!
