Week 6 Story: The battle of the Prom Dress
Lynnwood High: The school only the most elite students from the city attend. Within this high school are the typical jocks, the “nerds,” the queen bee, and the mean girls.
Meet Lindsay – She is the absolute It Girl of Lynnwood High. I’ve heard that people actually worship her. Within her “squad” as they call it is her best friend, Emma. Lindsay and Emma have been neighbors and best friends since they were three years old. Emma is also popular, but follows Lindsay around like a little lost puppy. What Lindsay does, Emma copies; where Lindsay goes, Emma follows. Emma, however, would not want it any other way; she loves the attention and popularity she receives just from being associated with Lindsay.
Meet Morgan – Another attendee of the good ole Lynnwood High. Lindsay and Emma would describe her as a nobody, but in reality, she is beautiful and well-liked by everyone.
The annual Lynnwood High Prom is approaching and prom season is almost as stressful as finals week here at Lynnwood. Who will everyone take as their date? Will they get a date? What if they don’t find a dress in time? So many things go into this ONE night every year. Lindsay and Emma were ecstatic for prom this year. Lindsay had been prepping for this since last year. She was determined to go with the starting quarterback football player. As the year trotted along and the day was quickly approaching, Lindsay had yet to be asked by Peter, the man of her dreams.
Three weeks before prom and Lindsay was starting to panic. She had declined date offers left and right all in hopes and confidence that Peter was going to be her date. The issue? That night Emma was scrolling through Instagram and saw a picture of Peter asking Morgan to prom. You would think the entire world was ending when Emma had to break the news to Lindsay.
“There’s just no way that’s true,” Lindsay said in fear, “we have to do something.” So that night Emma and Lindsay came up with a plan on how to sabotage Morgan so that Peter and Lindsay could go together.
Emma, being the pushover she is for Lindsay, devised an excellent plan.
“I’ll become friends with Morgan, fake friends of course, and ruin everything for her,” Emma suggested. So, for that entire next week, Emma started hanging out with Morgan, telling her that she and Lindsay had a huge falling out.
The sweet, innocent Morgan believed her. Morgan was telling her how excited she was for prom and even brought Emma prom-dress-shopping with her. When Emma saw Morgan’s top choice for prom dresses, she immediately texted Lindsay telling her everything. Lindsay and Emma came up with a plan that Emma was going to say that she didn’t love that dress on Morgan even though it was perfect and Lindsay was going to buy it instead.
Later that week, Lindsay tried to go buy the dress, but it was gone. She was confused and texted Emma and she said that it should still be there because Morgan hadn’t purchased it and Emma put it on hold for Lindsay. With no other options, Lindsay had to purchase a new dress. On the night of prom, Lindsay showed up to the dance and Emma was seen wearing the exact same dress that Lindsay was supposed to buy.
“Why are you wearing that dress?" Lindsay asked. "You said it was sold!!!!” Emma quickly snapped back, “Morgan and I decided that it would look better on me.” That entire night, Emma and Morgan were attached to the hip, and Lindsay was defeated with no friends.

Authors Note: This story was based around the plot and theme of the story "The Ass, the Lion, and the Fox." In the original story, the Lion was dying and the only cure to his illness was to eat the heart and the ears of the Ass. The Lion appointed the Fox to bring the Ass to the Lion's den so that he could feast on him and live a longer life, and the Fox gladly accepted his request. However, at the end of the story, the Fox betrays the Lion by devouring the heart and ears himself, while the Lion was bathing. It was interesting writing a completely different story based on this one. I decided to use a typical High School setting because as I was reading the original story, I immediately thought about how catty friendships can turn into a betrayal. I had a lot of fun recreating this story!
Hi Madeline! Wow, your story is such a creative retelling! I loved the twist at the end. You set it up in such a way that the reader really doesn't see it coming! I was sitting here thinking, "Ugh, what awful girls!" but was so happy that it all worked out. Your technique is good and you've got a great creative spirit!

Hello Madeline! Great job taking the original story and turning it into your own! Mean Girls is such a classic movie, so using it as inspiration was a great idea since it allows readers who have seen it to relate it to a modern movie. I also enjoyed the ending where the "mean girl" got what she deserved and the nice girl came out on top. My only suggestion would be explaining Emma's thoughts behind her decision to turn on Lindsay, since it was a bit unexpected and sudden. Overall, this story is super fun and creative to read!
ReplyDeleteHey Madeline!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your take on this story. I think you hit the nail on the head when you talked about how this story is just like high school. I remember being in high school and hearing about the things that you described in the story. I do enjoy that you made the story from the perspective of humans and gave it a more humanistic feel. I always enjoy the evil person at the end gets the justice they deserve! I hope to continue to read the rest of your stories.
